Many people who want to create a mobile lifestyle, expats who want to explore new countries or expat partners who go with their husbands/wives on an international assignment more often choose to create a portable career, a career that you can take with you wherever you decide to live.

This type of career is based on your skillset, gifts, values and first of all the vision of your desired lifestyle. And with the help of the technology actually, you have many opportunities to take your career with you. You can coach people on different challenges via Skype, teach languages online, create online programmes, build websites, organise Yoga retreats, become a virtual assistant, freelance writing … and much more. You can combine all your passions and create multiple income streams. In today’s post, you will find some tools which will help you get clear about your portable career idea.

1. Your life vision. The most important step is to understand how do you want your life to look like?

How do you imagine your life in a host country or the country you dream to live?

How would you like to start and finish your day?

What would your ideal work hours be?

When you are clear about your life vision it is much easier to match your dream career with your desired lifestyle. So take a few minutes or hours and answer the questions above.

So, you can live your expat lifestyle, live in the country you love or travel when or where you want. When I was starting out I knew that I wanted to work with international clients, people who are working or want to work abroad. Later on, through work with my mentors, teachers and mastermind groups, I got much clearer on my client’s avatar. Here are some questions which I used and I am still using to know better my client, and discover his/her challenges, problem, goals….:

Who is my client (think about age, gender, occupation)?

What are his/hers needs? Why does he/she need help?

What are you the solution he/she needs?

5. Your doubts and questions. In the beginning, you can feel confused about the idea of a portable career. If you are not sure how to start asking questions, explore different ideas about portable careers. Read books about it, there are so many interesting and good books about expat life and portable careers. Create your own support group or attend a networking meeting and connect with people who created a mobile lifestyle.
