There’s a saying that the biggest part of your success is your mindset. And while that’s true, I’ve learned something even more powerful: it’s not only about mindset, it’s about your thinking patterns.
When I left my 9–5 job, I initially structured my business exactly like traditional employment. Same hours. Same rigid schedule. Slowly, I allowed myself flexibility. That shift wasn’t just about time; it marked my transition into entrepreneurial thinking.
Over the years, I’ve noticed three core differences between Employee Thinking and Entrepreneurial Thinking:
Scarcity vs. Abundance
- Employee thinking is often scarcity-oriented: limited opportunities, limited resources.
- Entrepreneurial thinking is abundance-oriented: opportunities can be created, expanded, and multiplied.
- Employee thinking sees anything beyond income as an expense.
- Entrepreneurial thinking understands that money spent on growth, coaching, education, and systems is an investment in future results.
- Employee thinking sees self-employment as risky.
- Entrepreneurial thinking recognises that employment offers no guarantees, and that sacrificing your health or dreams may be the biggest risk of all.
- How do you see your thinking, more of an employee or an entrepreneur?
- Do you view self-employment as risky for you or your family?
- How ready are you to invest in yourself and your business?
- What small step can you take today to move toward entrepreneurial thinking? (Reading, networking, adjusting your schedule, learning something new…)
If your thinking feels more like the employee model, that’s okay. Most of us were trained that way from childhood. Awareness is the first step to change.
A Simple Tool: Affirmations
To shift your thinking, start with positive affirmations.
Effective affirmations are:
Positive – Focus on what you want.
Personal – Start with “I” or “My.”
Present tense – As if it’s already true.
Example:
“I am a successful business owner working with clients all over the world.”
Write 3 affirmations for your business, career or life. Read them aloud five times every morning and evening. As you say them, imagine what you see, hear, and feel.
Remember:
Your thoughts create your feelings.
Your feelings influence your actions.
Your actions create your results.
Thoughts come and go. They are not always facts. They don’t always tell the truth. So don’t take every thought too seriously, but do keep taking small, consistent action every day.
Your thinking shapes your reality.
