The Importance Of Setting Up Your Goals

We are almost halfway through the year, June is approaching and it is a good time to ask yourself: How far have you come toward your goals? Did you get your dream job? Are you working with a group of awesome and committed clients? Are you where you want to be in your business or your career? Stop for a moment and reflect on your progress. What can you improve? Your interview skills? Your CV? Your marketing strategy? What is still missing in your action plan?

Most people aren’t clear on what they want, and therefore rarely get what they want. Without goals in your life, you are lost and you don’t have control, of your own future. Setting goals gives you clarity, direction, motivation and focus.

Today I am inviting you to CLARIFY your professional goals. Here is an exercise that can help you to clarify your career goals.

1. Write or review your vision. Review your vision or write down on the paper everything you want to achieve in your career, think about your passions, describe your dream job and a person you would like to become in your professional life. Let your imagination run wild and allow you all the time you need to write your list. You can stop and come back to your list the next day and add some new ideas.

2. Ask yourself 5 questions, which will help you to explore your current situation.

  • Where are you now with your goal?
  • What have you done so far towards achieving your goal?
  • What has stopped you from doing more?
  • What is within/out of your control when it comes to this goal?
  • What obstacles are you facing?

3. Your action plan. Review your action plan.

  • What is the most important action you can take during the next six months to achieve your vision/goal?
  • How committed are you on a scale of 1-10 to take these actions?
  • What could stop you from taking your actions?
  • How are you going to overcome this?

4. Explore your limiting beliefs. Often people don’t know that they have limiting beliefs about themselves and that their beliefs have a big impact on the quality of all aspects of their lives. Sometimes people don’t understand why they are not achieving their goals. This is because of their beliefs and goals conflict. Write down things you must do and then ask yourself a question “What would happen if you didn’t?. This will help you to discover your core limiting beliefs and be aware of the consequences of various actions.

5. Keep up your motivation. Having a clear strategy and plan of action automatically motivates you! Each time you complete a task you will experience a burst of enthusiasm and your self-esteem will grow.

Go and review your vision, your goals and your action plan. Remember to be flexible. Your goals/vision can change over upcoming weeks, months or years. Keep updating your vision and your action plan. Be gentle with yourself and when an obstacle comes up think about a solution and what can you change or improve in your plan.
