If you are using LinkedIn to develop your network, find a new job or grow your business in today’s post you will find some useful information which will help you to build your LinkedIn profile like a pro. I have said this many times and will say it again: I am a great fan of LinkedIn and I use it in my business. Here is your LinkedIn Checklist:
1. What is your intention? Are you using LinkedIn to find a job or grow your business? It is important to set up your goal. Your goal can change through time, for example, there was a time I used LinkedIn for job search activities and now I am using it to grow my business connections.
2. Make sure your profile is 100% filled in. There is an option on your profile which will show you if your profile is 100% complete and it will indicate your profile strength. There are 5 levels of LinkedIn 'Profile Strength’: (5) All-Star (4) Expert (3) Advanced (2) Intermediate (1) Beginner. You are aiming for All-Star here!
3. Write a powerful Summary Statement. In your statement, you should give an idea what have you done for your previous employers or clients. Showcase your achievements. Use bullet points to make your summary clear and easy to read. Include your contact details or a link to your website so your potential clients or employers can find you.
4. Include your skills and ask your past clients, employers or colleagues to endorse you for your skills. Add skills which are relevant to your industry, your strong points.
5. In your experience section showcase your achievements. Do not include only your responsibilities but show what results you achieved in your past jobs, what have you done for the company or your clients.
6. Add projects you are working or worked on to make your profile more interesting and catchy for the reader. Did you help to organise a workshop or were invited as a guest speaker to an event? If yes, add it to your project section. For example, my podcast is one of my projects.
7. Remember about your volunteer experience. It makes you more employable, shows that you care to develop or improve your skills. And it can fill in the gap in your career path. Include volunteer experience relevant to your industry. For example, I included my experience as a Mentor for long-term unemployed people and Youth Coach, all related to the personal and professional development industry.
8. Add your publications. Did you write an article on a subject which can be of interest to your clients or employers? Add it to the Publication section.
9. Be proud of your awards! Have you been awarded as an employee of the month? Or have you been awarded for your job, project, publication…? Showcase this on your profile. There is a special section for it.
10. Add some colour to your profile. Now you can add a background photo to your profile, I am not a big fan of it. However under your summary, experience there is an option Add Media, you can add a photo, a description of your company, a link to your website, a video. It will make your profile more interesting and catchy.
Go and build a powerful profile. Start with one small step and work on your profile daily or weekly, make connections, join relevant networking groups, share your posts and support others.
