I am sitting here at my desk and reflecting on my career goals and what does it mean to have a successful career.
Does it mean to earn a lot, be satisfied with what are you doing or having a career which matches your desired lifestyle?
There was a time in my life when I thought that having a good salary was a sign that you are successful in your career.
But this thinking changed quite quickly.
I still want to earn a nice sum of money but the meaning of a successful career changed for me.
I also thought that you need to work really hard to be successful in your professional life.

I have been working since I was 15 years old. I started to get seasonal jobs so I could have some money in my pocket.
My parents wanted me to put that money in a saving account and I wanted to spend them on new clothes.
My purpose for working was different. However, until my early thirties, I thought that what I wanted from my professional life was wrong.
I am so grateful that now we are living in the times where you have a possibility to create a career around your dream lifestyle, a career which is based on your own, personal values and is fulfilling your purpose.
Although we are bombarded with news about high unemployment every day this is the best time to create your own career, to start doing something you have always dreamt about.
There are millions of people out there starting, creating and running their careers and businesses.

So what does it mean to have a successful career?
Here are mine 3 pillars of a successful career:
1. Your Values. How clear are you on your own personal values? If you are looking to change something in your career make sure you are crystal clear about your values.
2. Your Life vision. If you want to create success in your career map out your dream life vision. My life vision is congruent with my values, too. I value freedom and variety. I love travelling, living and staying in different countries. That’s why I created this portable career. Your life vision can be different from mine. I have a colleague who doesn’t want to live abroad. She wants to stay in her home country and live in the countryside and work from there. There is no wrong or right life vision. You are building your own life.
3. Your purpose. Why are you actually working? Why do you want to create your dream career or business? For years I was working to pay my bills, put money apart and go on holidays. This wasn’t my purpose this was the purpose which my parents and society have taught me through the years. Now my purpose for working is to create abundance in my life, travel whenever I decide (not my boss), and buy some nice clothes, too. And create an impact on people’s lives.
My questions for you today are:
What is your vision of a successful career?
How your career life is congruent with your values and life vision?
Be open to your new thoughts, new ideas and a new vision of your life and career. And take actions!
