A few days ago, someone reached out to me and said:
“I’ve been feeling unsure about my career direction lately. What’s one small step I can take?”
It’s a question I hear often and one that many of us quietly carry. That sense of uncertainty can feel uncomfortable, even frustrating. But it’s not a sign that you’re failing or falling behind. More often, it’s a gentle internal nudge letting you know that something is shifting… and that you’re ready for change.
When you’re unsure of your next move, you don’t need a five-year plan or a grand vision. You just need one honest, grounded step. And the simplest place to start is with a bit of self-reflection.
I often recommend creating what I call a “career clarity list.”
Grab a notebook or open a blank document and explore three questions:
- What energises you?
Think about moments when you felt alive, motivated, curious, or deeply engaged. These experiences often point toward your strengths and natural interests.
- What drains you?
These are the tasks, dynamics, or environments that consistently leave you depleted. Noticing them is just as important; they highlight what you may need to reduce or avoid.
- When have you felt truly fulfilled—at work or outside of it?
Fulfilment doesn’t always come from job titles. Sometimes it shows up in side projects, community roles, or moments of connection. These clues reveal what genuinely matters to you.
Once your list is complete, step back and look for patterns.
You’ll often notice themes emerging, your values, the environments where you thrive, and the type of work that feels meaningful to you.
Clarity rarely arrives all at once. It grows through reflection, awareness, and small but intentional steps.
And this little list? It’s a powerful place to begin.
