The Worst Thing You Can Do To Yourself While Changing Careers or Building Your Business

Many years ago I was on my summer annual trip to Poland visiting family and friends. I was still a student living abroad and having a babysitting job on the side. I remember one of my aunties told me how proud she was of her daughter in law, who was married, was having a baby and a normal 9 to 5 job, and she was more or less my age.  I felt terrible for a moment, starting comparing myself and was thinking „Why she is telling me that? „ To make me feel worst that I was studying abroad, with a part-time job and no husband.

The truth is that you can very easily start comparing yourself and your results to others. And this is the worst thing you can do to yourself while changing careers or building your dream business. It will affect your self-esteem and you can end up stuck without taking any actions.

You can look at the social media and see your colleagues having a wonderful lifestyle and working with all the clients they want, while you are behind your computer, thinking „What is wrong with me?”. I am guilty of that, too.

How can you stop comparing yourself?

Here are my suggestions:

1. Go on a digital detox. From time to time switch off all the social media. It can be for three days or one week. Go for a walk instead without your phone to quiet down and relax. You will come back with a fresh mind and some new ideas about your next career or business steps. I know it can be hard to switch off from all the social media but you can start small with one day per week and you will notice the difference.

2. If you have to compare yourself to someone, compare yourself to yourself. Think about where were you in your career/business last year, last six or three months. This will help you to see how far have you come, what have you achieved, learnt during that time, what type of person are you right now.

3. Don’t listen to what others are saying and their expectations about your life, career or business. Think about what you want and follow your own path. Thanks for the feedback and keep taking your actions. Sometimes our family members or friends can criticise our choices because they want to protect us or they are scared of their own dreams.

4. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Join a group of career-changers or business owners. You can build your own mastermind group. Or join our Businessful Circle Group if you are starting or growing your business. There are many offline or online groups with members willing to cheer you up and help you to overcome challenges and obstacles.

5. If you feel that you need more personalised support you can start working with a mentor or a coach, someone who is one step ahead of you, someone who has been through the journey you are embarking on.

It is not easy to change career, start and grow your business but it is possible and there is no point to waste your time thinking what others have done and that you are so behind on your journey. My challenge for you this week is to take one day off from all the social media and let me know what have you noticed.
