How has living abroad reshaped your identity?
Most people think moving abroad is about logistics: a new job, a new language, a new system.
But the real shift is much deeper.
It’s you.
If you left your home country around adulthood, you didn’t become a “third culture kid.”
You did something different: you consciously rebuilt parts of your identity.
And that can take different forms:
- You might feel rooted + expanded
You know where you come from, but you now see the world through multiple lenses. - You might have a hybrid identity
You’re no longer 100% “from” one place, and that’s not a problem, just a new reality. - You might feel in-between
Not fully belonging here or there, constantly adapting, sometimes a bit tired of it. - Or you might have reinvented yourself
Distance gave you permission to become someone you couldn’t be before.
None of these is wrong.
But each comes with its own strengths and challenges.
The real question is not “Where are you from?”
It’s:
Who have you become because you left?
That’s where the clarity (and the power) is.
Curious:
When you go back “home,” do you feel the same… or slightly like a different version of yourself?
