I like changes and I focus on improving my life and my business. Lately, I have been thinking about how can I improve my work environment, what can I change for the better…? When the work environment is in conflict with your life purpose or doesn’t allow you to apply your own work style, you will be not so productive and satisfied and you can quit the job position very quickly.
When you are in a career transition, thinking about a new job, setting up your own business or you have just moved to a new location and you are evaluating your options it is important to reflect on your ideal work environment.
Here are 7 factors of the work environment which you can explore while looking for a new career:
1. Geographic location: Where would you like to work? In the city or would you like to relocate? Would you like to work in the office or outdoors? At home? Would you like to travel as part of your job?
2. Pace: Do you enjoy a busy environment or an environment with peaceful and busy pace?
3. Compensation: How much money do you want to earn in your ideal job? Which benefits are important? If you are thinking about your own business, what are your financial targets in one year time?
4. Support: A perfect way to avoid burnout is to develop a supportive environment, in which you have a sense of significance, autonomy, challenge, and support. It can be a company mentoring program, a new employee orientation or a boss who is caring. If you are starting your own business you can join some business start-up groups or get a coach.
5. Company size: Do you prefer to work alone, one or two co-owners, or in a large company setting? When working for yourself do you think about hiring help in the future? Or how can you delegate some of your tasks so you can focus on your zone of genius?
6. Primary function: Do you prefer to work primarily with people, with data, or with things? Do you want to provide a service or create a product?
7. Organizational culture: Do you prefer a company that is conservative or radical, socially conscious or not, employee-oriented or bottom line/results?
The 7 factors above will help you to evaluate your work environment, your sense of fit within the organisation. If you feel like you fit into the culture of the organisation, you will stay longer. And if you are thinking about working for yourself those questions are your guide to creating the work environment you have been dreaming of for a long time.
