A 5 step Guide To Finding Your Life Purpose

What is your Life Purpose?

It is a big question which sometimes it is very hard to answer.

The life purpose deserves a central role in career and life planning and we can lose it when we are in transition, for example when changing jobs, moving to a different country or looking for a new career path.

Every person has a life purpose, but it can take a long time to discover it.

You may variously feel a lack of fulfilment, for example, you can say “I like my job but I feel that is something missing. “ You can feel confused about your professional and personal goals and do not know which steps you can take.

When you will discover what is your life purpose you will finally feel the fulfilment.  The fact is that our purpose is not found in our career but we can achieve it through our job.

Here are 5 steps which will help you to discover your life purpose:

Step 1: Look at your life and career from a new perspective, listen to your intuition, tell yourself that you can have clarity about your purpose. Then ask yourself these questions:

  1. What do you love to do in your spare time or at work?
  2. What parts of your job do you enjoy?
  3. What things do you need to be remembered for at the end of your life?
  4. What matters most to you in life?
  5. What are your greatest passions?
  6. What do you make a stand for? Make a determined effort for? Defend? or stop from happening?
  7. What stirs your emotions?
  8. What makes your heart sing?
  9. What most motivates you into action with natural enthusiasm?
  10. What inspires you?

Step 2: Dedicate 15 minutes a day to sitting quietly and focusing on just being there.  By being quiet, we can listen to the answers to our questions, especially when we are at the career crossroads.

Step 3. Write down your life purpose. Your life purpose should be written in two parts:

1. the essence which is unchanged through one’s life and

2. the expression which changes as life circumstances change.

For example:

To live in balance and harmony with myself and help others to discover their goals, potential and talents in life… through working as a…

Step 4: Explore your motivators. Ask yourself:

  1. What are your reasons (natural motivations) for achieving this purpose?
  2. When you think about these reasons how do they make you feel about taking action?

Step 5: Take actions. To implement your life purpose:

  1. do activities related to it as a first thing in the morning
  2. whenever you have a choice or a decision to make, ask yourself which option takes you closer to your purpose
  3. be willing to change
  4. think about your life purpose as an organizing principle for your life.

Ask yourself: What are my long and short-term goals? What actions am I going to take?
