How To Start Your Own Coaching Business

Coaching is a fast growing industry and there are many people who are thinking about starting their own coaching practice but they feel overwhelmed with all the information and they do not know what to do or how to start. Recently a few of you asked me how to start working as a Coach and I decided to share with you some initial steps.  Coaching can be also your portable career if you are looking for that kind of movable career, something that you can take with you wherever you decided to live.

It is normal to feel confused and overwhelmed at the beginning, I have been there, too.

1. Create your vision. Start with asking yourself some simple questions which will help you to get clear on your business idea: How do you imagine your business? Do you want to be a full – time or part- time coach? How your new business will fit with your life vision? Share your vision with a fellow coach or with a fellow student if you are doing a coaching programme. Remember your vision can change over the time. You are exploring, testing and changing.

2. What are your skills, your experience, and your interests? How can you use your skills to serve others? How can you connect the dots and create a coaching service based on your skills, interests, gifts, passions? I wanted to build something based on my international experience, my background in psychology, recruitment, career advice and customer service and I came up with career coaching for expats.

3. Who do you want to serve? At the beginning, it can be challenging to find your niche, and as your business vision, your niche (your ideal client avatar) can change over the years or months. I was clear about my clients since I started my coaching journey but you don’t have to. Think about what kind of clients you would like to work with? What are their challenges, problems, goals…?

4. How do you want to serve? What kind of service do you want to offer? Face to face coaching, coaching over Skype, one to one coaching, group coaching or a mix? What kind of results your clients will achieve by working with you? What will be the outcome? Do you want to offer intensive coaching sessions or long term coaching (6 to 12 months)?

5. Build your coaching business on the side. If you are still full-time employee keep your job and grow your business on the side. If you can ask for the part time contract or find a part-time job. Look at your job as an investment into your business and your professional development.

6. Get support. Get yourself a coach, a mentor or join business support groups. When I was starting I joined many business groups and get a coach, I wanted to be surrounded by people like me or people with more experience than me. Ask questions, share your thoughts and network.

It is not simple to build a coaching business, and it can take many years to be successful and switch to coaching as your full-time profession. You must be committed to your vision and do whatever it takes. Take one step a time. You will see your progress and you will change in a positive way during your experience.
