How To Find Your Business Idea In 3 Steps

Two weeks ago I shared with you 3 steps to building a business that suits your lifestyle. Today we will explore more about how to find your business idea. The questions here are: Do you know what you already have? Do you know how to turn what you have into income? Let’s look at it further:

1. Know what you have. Think about your gifts, skills, interests you enjoy using. When I was thinking about leaving my 9 to 5 job I knew I wanted to combine my personal experience as an expat, my background in recruitment, psychology and career counselling. You can say: “But I don’t know what my skills, gifts are. I don’t know what I enjoy doing!” I have an answer for you because there are some places you can look for clues:

a. Think about your childhood: what did you like to do as a child? did you like to read? did you like to compete? did you like to draw?

b. Who do you envy (but in a positive, healthy way). Who do you admire? It doesn’t mean you need to be like that person but there are some aspects of his/her life you are envious about (it’s healthy envy remember).

c. Pay attention to compliments. What people are complimenting you about? Do they tell you you are good at something? If not, ask them and they will tell you.

d. Natural gifts: What comes naturally to you, that you even don’t recognize? Think about it.

Please spend some time and reflect on the above clues.

2. How you can turn what you have into income. Let’s suppose you love cooking and you are a vegetarian or you just like healthy food. So what you can do with your interest? Here is a little brainstorm exercise: think about what product could you create (an online programme about healthy eating?) what kind of service could you offer (a workshop, one to one consultations?), or maybe you can open a shop (a physical or an online shop?). List or your ideas and ask yourself which solution is most appealing to your future clients and yourself.

3. Before launching your business idea, product or service reflect: Who wants what you have? Who is going to pay you for your service? Describe your ideal client. Do your research. Who wants to know about healthy food: women over 40 who want to look fabulous or mothers of overweight children? Ask your potential ideal client what are his/her challenges, problems.

So go explore your gifts, skills, interest using the clues described before. Think about what product, service could you offer? And who can pay you for that?
