Are you thinking about changing your job? Do you want to start to work at what you love but are scared of the financial pressure? Are you asking yourself how can you transition from your day job to your dream business? Here are some steps which will help you to make this transition quick, easy and positively realistic for you.
1. Prepare your exit plan
The first thing and the most important one is to prepare a plan of action. Take some time to reflect and ask yourself: how would you like your life to be? how would you like your business to be? what are your goals(personal, professional, financial)? what do you really want? Then write down a random list of actions you can take to achieve your goals.
2. Working full-time and doing your business on the side
You don’t have to give up your full-time job and dedicate yourself fully to your own business. There are many people out there that are working during the week and they focus on their business at the weekend or in the evenings. Your full-time job can be one of your business resources.
3. Ask for part-time and do your business on the side
Anna was thinking about living her job and working full-time for herself but she knew that it wasn’t the right time to do it because with two children and the rent to be paid she couldn’t walk out right now. She thought about switching her contract to part-time. She asked her manager to speak about her situation and after a long conversation she negotiated to work 4 days per week instead of 5, so she could spend more time on her baking business.
4. Change your job completely, find a new part-time contract
Look for a part-time job or some temporary contracts and start to develop your business idea. In a few months, you can find a part-time job much closer to your apartment and also launch your business!
5. Take a sabbatical, work on your business, do some voluntary work to have a taste of your new career
Another suggestion for you is to try to find a way to have a taste of the new professional path or business idea you have chosen – or some aspects of it. For example, you can take a sabbatical and volunteer for 3 months.
6. Ask for financial grants
If you have a business idea you can look for sponsors or grants to develop your project further. If you are living in the UK you can research UK Business Grants http://www.ukbusinessgrants.org or http://www.virginstartup.org. You can find also some useful information on http://www.eubusiness.com/funding for grants, loans in Europe, or http://ec.europa.eu/small-business/finance/index_en.htm. Spend some time to do your research, ask questions, contact people who have been successful and are willing to give you some tips and advice.
7. How can you get supported
What additional support do you need? Starting a business is exciting but it can be tough sometimes. You can lose your energy and your motivation or self-esteem can decrease quickly. Surround yourself with people who can support you or read some positive stories to boost your motivation. Believe in yourself and what you can achieve.
These simple steps can really help you to start to work at what you love and live the life you want. Remember, a good action plan is the first step to your success, will help keep you on track and automatically motivates you to go further with your business project.
