I got an idea to start my own podcast The Expat Career and Lifestyle about two and a half years ago. The purpose of it was to share information, tips and success stories about living and working aboard. And it is one of my favourite projects and a way of sharing my message with you.
Today I want to share with you behind the scenes and a few directions about how to start and run the podcast if you decide to have your own show.
- What is your purpose and why do you want to start your podcast?
Think about it, running a podcast is a commitment so ask yourself why do you want to do it?
Do you want to share your story, tips and inspire people? What is your Why?
- Get clear about who is your audience and what are you going to talk about?
Who are your listeners? My podcast is for people, mainly women who are living or moving aboard and want to create a fulfilling career around their international life?
Go and think about who is your ideal listener avatar and write it down.
- Think about the format of your podcast.
Do you want to invite and interview guests or share your own tips and experience?
I personally do both. I like to invite guests and have a different perspective about living and working abroad and also share my own experience.
Which format do you prefer?
- How to prepare your content.
Every two or three months I think about who I want to invite for the next episodes.
I contact a potential guest and once we agree the day for the interview I write my questions down and send them to the new guest.
I research the information about the new guest prior to sending the invitation and if for example, the person wrote a book or an interesting article I like to read it before the interview. You see I like to be prepared.
For my own personal content, I like to prepare scripts, write down what I am going to talk about during the episode.
- Choose how often you want to podcast.
I started with monthly episodes and then I realised I wanted to have more guests on my podcast and this year I do two episodes per month.
If you want to reach more people with your podcast do two episodes per month.
- How long should be your episodes?
My episodes are from 5min to 40 min long.
I think 20 minutes is the average for the podcast episodes.
- How to record your content.
I use Skype Recorder or Zoom to record the interviews.
For recording my own solo episodes I use Audacity. I use Audacity for editing, too. It is a great tool.
- Where to host your podcast?
I use Libsyn to host The Expat Career and Lifestyle podcast.
It is super simple to use and very cost-effective and you will find all the information and tutorials there about how to set up your own podcast.
Libsyn provides you with the RSS Feed which you can send out to iTunes, Google Play, and other locations to share your show.
- Choose the right microphone so you can have an excellent quality of audio.
You can do research online about what are the best microphones recommended for the podcast.
Think about your budget, how much do you want to invest in your podcast.
- You can monetize your podcast by selling your products or selling advertising.
Once again think about the purpose of your podcast.
The purpose of mine is to share my message and inspire people to create a career they love around their dream international life. I do not want to monetize it.
- Go and listen to some podcast.
Do your research. Think about the audience and what are you going to talk about.
Record some episodes to test and have a taste of running a podcast before going live with it.
Ask for feedback or support if you need help.
- Remember running a podcast is a monthly or a weekly commitment so think twice before enrolling on this journey.
I want you to be 100% committed to this project!
How do you feel about it? How motivated are you? How enthusiastic are you? Ask yourself those questions!
It is very easy to start your own podcast. You don’t need to be an IT expert to do it and you do not require a big budget for your show. Podcasting is a great way to be visible, share your message, meet and connect with interesting people and have fun.
