How to start an international career?
You studied abroad and you would like to move again and work in the major metropolitan cities. You know that the opportunities in your native country are limited and you have so much to offer and you are willing to learn. The question is how to start your international career? Here you will find 7 simple steps which can help you to plan your international career:
1. Start to research the companies that you would like to work for and the job market in the city you are interested in. Stop for a moment and think about your background. What do you have to offer a new employer or the market? What are you good at? What are your technical or job-specific skills (acquired on the job or during training), soft skills (like relationship skills, being a team player, or building rapport) and transferable skills (which you can use in your new job position)?
2. You can start to apply for jobs, sending your CV and a cover letter and specify that you are willing to relocate. Keep in mind that some countries have a different format of CV: for example, the UK CV is different from the rest of Europe. Do your research beforehand, research international job boards or career advice websites.
3. You can start to work for a company in your home country and then see if there is an opportunity for you to be sent on an international assignment abroad. Remember to ask questions and show your interest and willingness to move aboard or work on international projects.
4. Move abroad and look for a job there (that’s the most difficult one but it is possible). Make a plan of your steps. Elaborate on your strategy for your first months.
5. Explore some international networking groups, make some new contacts, learn about the culture of the country you want to work in and also the local language. Networking is a great tool to develop your contacts. When talking with people do not say that you are looking for a job, it puts them on defence, but tell them that you are open to international opportunities, share with them your future vision, ask them about their strategy.
6. Attend career fairs. Are there any career fairs at your University or in your city? It is also a good starting point to explore companies, job possibilities, have an overview of the job market, make some new and valuable contacts and ask your questions so you can get clear about your movements.
7. Make an action plan, please feel free to download my Free e-programme: “Clarify your career goals: https://dmcoaching.eu/. It will help you to get clear on your career goals and create an action plan.
