I got an idea to start my own podcast The Expat Career and Lifestyle <\/strong><\/a>about two and a half years ago. The purpose of it was to share information, tips and success stories about living and working aboard. And it is one of my favourite projects and a way of sharing my message with you.<\/p>\n

Today I want to share with you behind the scenes and a few directions about how to start and run the podcast if you decide to have your own show.<\/p>\n

  1. What is your purpose and why do you want to start your podcast?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Think about it, running a podcast is a commitment so ask yourself why do you want to do it?<\/p>\n

    Do you want to share your story, tips and inspire people? What is your Why?<\/p>\n

    1. Get clear about who is your audience and what are you going to talk about? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Who are your listeners? My podcast is for people, mainly women who are living or moving aboard and want to create a fulfilling career around their international life?<\/p>\n

      Go and think about who is your ideal listener avatar and write it down.<\/p>\n

      1. Think about the format of your podcast.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Do you want to invite and interview guests or share your own tips and experience?<\/p>\n

        I personally do both. I like to invite guests and have a different perspective about living and working abroad and also share my own experience.<\/p>\n

        Which format do you prefer?<\/p>\n

        1. How to prepare your content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Every two or three months I think about who I want to invite for the next episodes.<\/p>\n

          I contact a potential guest and once we agree the day for the interview I write my questions down and send them to the new guest.<\/p>\n

          I research the information about the new guest prior to sending the invitation and if for example, the person wrote a book or an interesting article I like to read it before the interview. You see I like to be prepared.<\/p>\n

          For my own personal content, I like to prepare scripts, write down what I am going to talk about during the episode.<\/p>\n

          1. Choose how often you want to podcast.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            I started with monthly episodes and then I realised I wanted to have more guests on my podcast and this year I do two episodes per month.<\/p>\n

            If you want to reach more people with your podcast do two episodes per month.<\/p>\n

            1. How long should be your episodes? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              My episodes are from 5min to 40 min long.<\/p>\n

              I think 20 minutes is the average for the podcast episodes.<\/p>\n

              1. How to record your content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                I use Skype Recorder<\/a>\u00a0or Zoom <\/a>to record the interviews.<\/p>\n

                For recording my own solo episodes I use Audacity<\/a>. \u00a0I use Audacity for editing, too. It is a great tool.<\/p>\n

                1. Where to host your podcast?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  \u00a0<\/strong>I use Libsyn<\/a>\u00a0to host The Expat Career and Lifestyle podcast<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                  It is super simple to use and very cost-effective and you will find all the information and tutorials there about how to set up your own podcast.<\/p>\n

                  Libsyn provides you with the RSS Feed which you can send out to iTunes, Google Play, and other locations to share your show.<\/p>\n

                  1. Choose the right microphone so you can have an excellent quality of audio. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    You can do research online about what are the best microphones recommended for the podcast.<\/p>\n

                    Think about your budget, how much do you want to invest in your podcast.<\/p>\n

                    1. You can monetize your podcast by selling your products or selling advertising.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      Once again think about the purpose of your podcast.<\/p>\n

                      The purpose of mine is to share my message and inspire people to create a career they love around their dream international life. I do not want to monetize it.<\/p>\n

                      1. Go and listen to some podcast.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        Do your research. Think about the audience and what are you going to talk about.<\/p>\n

                        Record some episodes to test and have a taste of running a podcast before going live with it.<\/p>\n

                        Ask for feedback or support if you need help.<\/p>\n

                        1. Remember running a podcast is a monthly or a weekly commitment so think twice before enrolling on this journey.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                          I want you to be 100% committed to this project!<\/p>\n

                          How do you feel about it? How motivated are you? How enthusiastic are you? Ask yourself those questions!<\/p>\n

                          It is very easy to start your own podcast. You don’t need to be an IT expert to do it and you do not require a big budget for your show. Podcasting is a great way to be visible, share your message, meet and connect with interesting people and have fun.<\/p>\n
